Maritzburg first win sink Chippa

Thabiso Kutumela’s first-half strike [42′] gave Maritzburg United a rare victory against Chippa United at Harry Gwala stadium tonight.

The first win of the 2019/2020 season for the “Team of Choice” (Maritzburg) moves them up to position 12 on the league table with 5 points after 6 games – two draws and three losses.

“Massive [win] for the club and the boys,” said the relieved Maritzburg coach Eric Tinkler at the end of the game.

The “Chilli Boys'” (Chippa) woes continue unabated in top flight football. Interim coach Duran Francis watched helplessly towards the end of the game as the three points were imminently slipping away.

Dispirited fans streamed out of the lonely Harry Gwala stadium stands slowly. Leaving Francis in despair with his comment after the final whistle saying that they didn’t take their chances albeit dominating the last 45 minutes (second-half).

According to Francis, his mandate is to retain Chippa’ Premier League status.

Abundantly pleased with the three points, Tinkler said the result was more important than the performance. He further said they dominated the first-half and could have come up strong in the second half with a consolidation goal.
